About the NUS Geography Challenge

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Geography Challenge (GC) is an annual non-profit Geography competition jointly organized by the Department of Geography of NUS as well as the NUS Geographical Society. Since its official inception in 1997, the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has been the main sponsor of the event and the National Geographic Channel Asia has been the co-sponsor since 1999. Various agencies and statutory boards such as NEA, PUB and STB had also partnered the Geography Challenge series. It is also supported by the Ministry of Education and the Geography Teacher’s Association of Singapore.

The year 2005 heralded a new departure for NUS GC as the partnership with SPH and NGC ceased. NUS GC has since gained greater autonomy in organisation, backed with a strong sense of educational purpose. It continues to be noted for its large-scale engagement with schools and has benefited many generations of students aged 13 – 16 years old.
Jointly organised by the NUS Department of Geography and the NUS Geographical Society, the NUS Geography Challenge is well know as the biggest annual nationwide Geography competition for secondary schools in Singapore.

In its 13th consecutive episode, GC 2009 was centred on the theme of "Heritage Geography". The event received an overwhelming response of 79 secondary schools which signed up, having around 400 students, aged between 13 to 16, who participated. The competition was divided into 3 rounds. In the Preliminary Round, students had to answer an individual Multiple Choice Questions Component and a group Application Question Round. The top 30 schools which emergered will move on to the the semi-final round which consisted of Geo-Ad and Geo Trail.

Students had to prepare a short 2-min video clip based on a thematic question. Another unprecendented move was the invitation for schools that did not qualify for the top 30 spots to take part as well to allow them to express their creativity and innovativeness through the videos.

Geo Trail is a highly competitive round which called for the top 30 schools to embark on a trail to designated sites in Singapore. Each team had to strategise and navigate through a series of stations and complete the tasks set for them.

The final component would be the Finals where the top 3 schools from the semi-finals where the individuals of each team was pitted against one another. They were also asked to present their Geo-Ad video and had to face a Question and Answer Round with a panel of judges.

The whole event was a success and GC 2009 was honoured to have Lee Foundation and Senoko Power as the major sponsors. Asian Geographic also graced the event as the Official Publications Sponsor. GC 2009 had also benefitted from the help of the Geograpy Teachers' Association of Singapore (GTA), the National Heritage Board (NHB), the Public Utilies Board (PUB) as well as the Ministry of Education.
